About

The Ruth Borchard Collection is the UK’s only public collection of self-portraits by British and Irish artists, with 150 works and growing. The Original Collection was the life-long project of Ruth Borchard, who built up a collection of 100 self-portraits by the most distinguished twentieth-century artists in Britain.

In 2011, the Next Generation Collection was begun, adding self-portraits by eminent contemporary artists such as Maggi Hambling CBE, Anthony Eyton RA, Celia Paul and Thomas Newbolt to the Collection as a means of continuing Ruth Borchard’s project into the twenty-first century.

The inaugural Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize was held in 2011 at Kings Place Gallery, now Piano Nobile Kings Place, to celebrate the traditions of the Ruth Borchard Collection by encouraging self-portraiture in contemporary British and Irish art.

For the first time, in 2015, the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize was run in association with Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, as the official museum partner. For 2016, the museum partner is the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings.
